Difference between Brochures and Flyers

Brochures and flyers are two different products but are often confused with each other. Let’s try to understand the differences between these timeless communication tools. Flyers and brochures are often used interchangeably. Both are essential marketing tools that can be used by businesses and organizations, but they have different characteristics.

What is a Brochure?

The brochure, also called a booklet, is made up of a set of printed sheets, bound and joined together inside a cover, to form a sort of small book or catalog. It is therefore a product with many possible options, made up of a limited number of pages (from 6 to 20 pages). The dimensions of a brochure are generally standard and the most commonly used formats are A4 or A5.

There are several techniques for binding a booklet/brochure. The most common type of binding for products with a limited number of pages is staple binding. In this case, the pages of the brochure are assembled by the application of two simple metal staples. In the case of publications with a larger number of pages, we generally use glued square back binding, which consists of gluing the pages to the back of the cover using special glue. Another possibility of binding is the metal spiral which will allow a flat opening of the document.

When to use a Brochure?

As mentioned above, a brochure consists of 6 to 20 pages. Consequently, it will offer rich and detailed content, which the flyer will not be able to accept given its small available printing surface. Usually, a brochure is meant to end up in the hands of a more interested and focused reader who is willing to take the time to read the information it contains. The brochure, in fact, is not distributed to everyone in a massive way, it is offered during targeted events or on special occasions. It can be used to present an offer, a new product or service, or to provide the reader with a series of in-depth information on a particular subject.

What is a Flyer?

The flyer is the simplest and best-known tool among other marketing stationery. It consists of a single sheet printed on one or two sides, which is massively distributed to a large number of people. The purpose of the flyer is to help increase the visibility of an offer, product, service, brand, or event.

The flyer is one of the most used means of communication because it is a simple, immediate and inexpensive way to communicate information to your target. It can be printed in different formats and types of paper, depending on the needs and the expected result. By selecting the material, weight, and size of the flyer, you can help spread the message you want to convey.

When to use a Flyer?

Flyers, due to their simplicity and low cost, are often used for mass communication and distributed at large public events or in the city center. Their main goal is to capture the reader’s attention in an instant. Their mission is completed in seconds, while the reader takes a quick read.

It is precisely for this reason that simple and quick messages that capture attention are preferred when printing a flyer. To do this, different techniques are proven: curious title, catchphrase, or super reduced price. This is usually followed by a “call to action”, which is an invitation for the reader to take an action like visiting a store or website. To further encourage this action, it is possible to print a coupon or a QR code on the flyer.
