That’s the appeal of embossing and debossing, two finishing techniques that shape the surface of your print rather than adding ink to it. The two work in opposite directions. Embossing lifts the design above the surface. Debossing presses it below. Both use a custom-cut die matched to your artwork, and both rely on the same finishing press, so choosing between them usually comes down to the look you want rather than the process itself.

A few ways we shape that finish for clients:

• Blind embossing, no ink or foil at all, just the raised texture catching light and shadow on its own
• Combination embossing, foil and emboss together, for a finish that’s both metallic and dimensional
• Debossing, the recessed version, often used on heavier or leather-textured stocks for a quieter, pressed-in look
• Registered embossing, where the raised area is aligned precisely over printed text or artwork, rather than left blank
