A rectangle is the default shape for print, not the only one. Die-cutting is a finishing technique that shapes packaging, cards, stickers, and stationery into custom outlines using a precision-cut blade, rather than trimming everything to a standard edge.

Two approaches cover most of what clients ask for. Custom shape die-cutting cuts all the way through the material, ideal for packaging cutouts, unique card shapes, and folders with tabs or windows. Kiss-cutting cuts only the top layer, common on stickers and labels where the backing sheet needs to stay intact for peeling.

Where volume matters, we move to rotary die-cutting, running continuous cuts through a cylindrical die for speed and consistency across large print runs. For one-off or lower-volume jobs, flatbed die-cutting gives more precision on intricate shapes.

A few things worth knowing before you brief us:

• Die-cutting pairs well with foil stamping, embossing, or spot UV on the same piece
• Tighter, more intricate shapes generally need a higher-detail die and a slightly longer lead time
• Sample proofs are recommended before a full production run, especially on new shapes
